Herd Tennis Defeats JMU Friday

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Tennis team (10-7) defeated JMU (9-7) Friday afternoon, 4-0. Polina Gumeniuk's play finished off singles as well as doubles alongside Paula Berzina.

"Great playing by Johanna and Polina, felt like that was the best doubles match they have played all year," said Head Coach John Mercer. Great job hanging tough in third doubles with Paula and Polina, that was the first time they have played together and they looked like a really good combination. I felt like we did a really good job in singles, getting off to good starts and competing hard. It was really good to see, it was a good team win.".

The doubles point was closely contested, with Marshall's No. 3 team of Polina Gumeniuk and Paula Berzina fighting off two match points and sealing a tiebreak victory, 8-6.

The Herd carried the momentum and the four singles matches to take the contest, with Johanna Strom, Alina Mokrynska, and Gumeniuk picking up the victories. Nour El Ouazzani and Thalia Smith were up as well when clinch was secured, with Sarah Copley about to even her contest at a set apiece.
