Marshall Softball Earns Hard-Fought Road Series Win at Texas State

3/29/2026 7:54:00 PM | Softball

SAN MARCOS, Texas — Marshall Softball defeated Texas State Sunday by a 2-1 scoreline for the second-consecutive contest, earning a hard-fought series victory at the Preseason Sun Belt Conference favorites.

The win sends Marshall to 25-10 and 7-2 in SBC play. Head Coach Morgan Zerkle's Herd will enter the fourth week of the conference season with a share of the league lead.

"Really proud of the gritty pitching performances we had this weekend," Coach Zerkle said. "We still need to step it up offensively but it was great to see them fight back after a tough first game of the weekend."

Sophomore Sydni Burko got the Herd started in the opening inning with her 14th home run of the season. Marshall would score in the following inning on an Ava Blake RBI hit to jump out in front by a pair, turning the ball over to starter Jules King.

As the pitching staff has complemented each other all season long, King picked up where sophomore Maddie Veal left off Saturday. King threw 146 pitches with two strikeouts on the afternoon to earn her 10th victory of the season.

King worked around Texas State baserunners all afternoon, most critically in the 5th when she retired the SBC Preseason Player of the Year with the bases loaded and two out. She retired eight Bobcats in total, including the potential tying and winning run on base when sealing the victory in the 7th with a popout to shallow left to Paige Simpson.

The trio of King, Veal and Paige Maynard all have a sub-3.00 ERA.
