Marshall Softball Wins Eighth-Straight to Sweep Home-Opening Weekend

3/8/2026 3:41:00 PM | Softball

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall put the finishing touches on a 4-0 weekend with a 7-1 victory over Canisius Sunday at Dot Hicks Field. The Herd (17-8) again saw strong pitching from Jules King with a career-day offensively from Ramey George, who went 3-for-3 with a three-run home run to put the game out of reach in the 5th.

The win caps a perfect home-opening weekend where the Herd outscored its opponents 26-2 as the team moves into Sun Belt Conference play next week.

"It was fun to be home and see our crowd," Zerkle said. "We've been down a little bit with some sickness and I think that did show this weekend even though we got the sweep, we definitely were not at our highest strength. They did the job and got the wins but there is a better version of the Herd that we've yet to see here in Huntington. Hopefully we can get well, get rested, and get after Georgia State next weekend."

George's opposite-field home run punctuated a four-run 5th for the Herd which had been needing the big hit all afternoon. MU finished with 10 base knocks on the day, but had left six on base prior to the two-out Ramey long ball. The Herd's junior from Huntington set a new career-high with three hits and four RBI with an RBI hit in the 2nd to open the scoring.

A hustle infield single from Ava Blake opened the inning before a successful sac-bunt turned-error off the bat of Chandler Hoskins and a sacrifice fly by Sydney Turner gave the hosts a three-run advantage. Blake finished the weekend with a team-leading seven hits in 12 at-bats.

King earned her seventh win in the circle for Marshall with five scoreless innings pitched. The junior held Canisius without a hit until the 5th. As a whole, Marshall pitching had a team ERA of 0.26 throughout Marshall March Madness.
