Herd registers first shutout of the season, Nugent tallies goal

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The (RV) Marshall Men's Soccer Team (3-1-2) opened up Sun Belt Conference play with a 1-0 shutout of the Kentucky Wildcats in Lexington, Kentucky.
"Fantastic performance from the lads tonight," Herd Men's Soccer Head Coach Chris Grassie said. "We again created so many chances, but tonight we showed that defensive solidity we know we're capable of. There's a lot more to come from us this season. And a special thank you to our fans, they made it feel like a home game for us tonight. Best sports fans in the country! Go Herd!
Yurij Obert had to step up early stopping a pair of Kentucky shots at the 2:36 and 3:43 marks.
Francisco Guimares and Andrew Armstrong had shots on target in the 17th and 40th minutes, but were saved by Gilles Monti to keep the score 0-0 heading into the intermission.
The Herd outshot the Wildcats 6-5 in the first half.
Just over 13 minutes into the second half, Carl Romberg tackled the ball away from a Wildcats defender at midfield. Joshua Nugent gathered the ball, sprinted past three UK defenders and beat Monti with a shot into the left corner to make it 1-0 on his third goal of the season.
Obert was called on again just a minute after the goal, stopping another Kentucky shot to keep the home side off the board in the 60th minute.
Nugent and Gabriel Stevanato each had shots on target in the 73rd and 77th, minutes respectively, but both attempts were saved.
MU kept UK without another shot on target in the final 30 minutes to hold on for the team's first clean sheet of the season.

Marshall returns home for a contest against Eastern Illinois on Tuesday.
