Herd Volleyball Completes Weekend Sweep of Georgia State

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Volleyball Team (9-4, 2-0) took another five-set battle (25-20, 25-16, 23-25, 22-25, 15-10) over the Georgia State Panthers on Saturday to complete a weekend sweep to open Sun Belt Conference action in Huntington.

The Herd is off to its first 2-0 start in conference play since 2019.

"Any time you can get an SBC win it's good day. So great day for the Herd," Herd Volleyball Head Coach Heather Stout said. "We came out hot. We were serving well and everyone was ripping. Our defense was taking advantage and our block was set up."

Beatrice Ciccarelli and Carys Kerr each registered 14 kills with Ciccarelli finishing with a .407 hitting percentage and Kerr sitting at .344.

Ciccarelli also rejected five shots as Emma Sayre recorded 26 digs and Kahea Carvalho dishing 28 assists. Maddie Smith accumulated 15 digs and 12 kills for a double-double.

The Panthers started the first set sitting on top of the Herd 16-11 through the first 27 points. However, Marshall rattled off a 10-2 run, capped off by a solo block from Kerr and a pair of kills from Emma Barnett, to take a 21-18 advantage. MU cruised the rest of the way as Ciccarelli sealed the set at 25-20 with the final kill.

After GSU grabbed the first point of the second set, the Herd was dominant the rest of the way. Kills from Ciccarelli and Logan Henderson put the home side up 2-1 as it never trailed the rest of the way. The Panthers tied the set 4-4, but MU went on a 9-0 run, featuring three Smith service aces, to grab a 13-4 lead. Kerr registered two of her kills on the evening to close out the set 25-16.

Georgia State eventually took a tightly contested third frame 25-23 and took the fourth wire-to-wire, 25-22, to force a deciding fifth set.

Marshall came out with vengeance in the fifth. From the opening point, the Herd never trailed and hit .318 in the set, committing just three errors on 22 attacks with 10 kills.
