R-SENIOR SEASON (2019): Played a second senior season after being given an additional year of eligibility … Played in 12 games at defensive back, including nine starts … Named a game captain once (vs. ODU) … Made 55 tackles, including 2.0 tackles for a loss and one sack … Also had one interception, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble … Season-high in tackles with 10 in a win against WKU on Oct. 26, including eight solo tackles … Also had an interception against the Hilltoppers … After his 10-tackle, one-interception performance in the 26-23 win against rival WKU, Merrell was named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week … Seven tackles in a win against ODU … Six tackles, one tackle for a loss, one sack and a forced fumble at Middle Tennessee … Six tackles in the Gasparilla Bowl vs. UCF.

SENIOR SEASON (2018):
Awarded an additional year of eligibility and will return to the team for a second senior season in 2019 … Cornerback who turned into a vital part of one of the best defenses in the country … Played in all 13 games, and started the last 10 games of the regular season … Finished with 35 tackles, seven pass breakups and one fumble recovery … Fumble recovery came against FAU after defensive lineman Malik Thompson force a fumble midway through the second quarter … Career-high six tackles against Middle Tennessee … In addition to the fumble recovery, made four tackles in the win vs. FAU … Also collected four tackles against N.C. State and Western Kentucky.

JUNIOR SEASON (2017): Played in nine games … Made two tackles.

HERD FILE: Born April 29, 1996 … A two-star prospect according to Rivals.com, 247sports.com and Scout.com ... Committed to Marshall on December 10 ... Posted 27 tackles (17 solo) with 1.5 tackles for loss and two interceptions (one returned for touchdown) in 2016 ... Also had offers from Arkansas State and Louisiana-Monroe ...
