R-SENIOR SEASON (2019): Played a second senior season after being given an additional year of eligibility … Played in 12 games at defensive back, including nine starts … Named a game captain once (vs. ODU) … Made 55 tackles, including 2.0 tackles for a loss and one sack … Also had one interception, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble … Season-high in tackles with 10 in a win against WKU on Oct. 26, including eight solo tackles … Also had an interception against the Hilltoppers … After his 10-tackle, one-interception performance in the 26-23 win against rival WKU, Merrell was named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week … Seven tackles in a win against ODU … Six tackles, one tackle for a loss, one sack and a forced fumble at Middle Tennessee … Six tackles in the Gasparilla Bowl vs. UCF.
