In 2021, Marshall won double-digit matches for the third-straight year, program’s longest streak since 1995-98, with 11 more wins. The Herd was ranked in the top 25 throughout the season and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Marshall’s defense set two more team records with seven-straight clean sheets and a span of 760 minutes and 37 seconds without conceding a goal. During his first season in 2020-21, the Herd won its second-consecutive Conference USA Championship with a 2-0 victory over 12th-ranked Charlotte at Hoops Family Field, earning its second-straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. Marshall then defeated the No.1 overall seed, Clemson Tigers, in the third round with an exciting match. The teams played through two overtime periods to a 1-1 tie, and then moved on to the penalty kick shootout. The Herd advanced, 7-6, to eliminate the No. 1 seed and move on to the Elite for the first time in program history.
Marshall then began a string of shutouts to finish its historic journey 1-0 over No. 8 Georgetown, 1-0 over No. 16 UNC in the Final Four and then taking down No. 3 Indiana 1-0 in overtime to win the 2020 College Cup National Championship.
