Sam Black is in his third season in 2021-22 with the Marshall University Strength and Conditioning program after being hired in August 2019. He previously spent the past two years as a graduate assistant in Belmont's strength and conditioning program.
Coach Black helped take the men's soccer team through its historic rise over the last few years. From winning the 2019 Conference USA Regular Season and Tournament Titles, to lifting the 2020 NCAA College Cup National Championship Trophy. The men's soccer program has been to the NCAA Tournament three-straight seasons and have had four players selected in the MLS Superdraft.
While completing his B.S. in Exercise Science, Black served as an intern under Belmont’s head strength & conditioning coach, Lee Rowland, assisting with the sports of men’s soccer and volleyball. After graduating in May 2016, he continued his work with the Bruins as a volunteer strength coach during the 2016-17 academic year.
Black also completed strength & conditioning internships with the University of Texas men’s basketball team in 2018, and the Vanderbilt University men’s basketball team in 2017, working alongside the strength & conditioning department during the team’s summer workouts. Black has also gained experience training youth soccer and volleyball athletes in the community, conducting personal training sessions through Chadwick’s Fitness and Performance in Franklin, Tennessee and serving as a head coach with Tennessee Soccer Club.
Black served as a graduate assistant coach for Belmont from 2017-2019, working directly with the sports of Men’s Soccer, Women’s Golf, and Women’s Tennis to develop and deliver all strength, speed, and conditioning programs for the teams. The Douglas, Isle of Man, UK native holds NSCA-CSCS certification, USA Weightlifting Level 1, Functional Movement Systems Level 1, as well as a US Soccer National D License, and FA Level 1 Award in Coaching through the English Football Association. He graduated from Belmont’s Master of Sport Administration program in 2019.
