Personal: Born May 29, 2006…daughter of Shannon and Shawn Akin…her mom, Shannon, competed in swimming and cross country at Wayne State…has one sister, Aileen…chose Marshall “due to the close-knit family feel I noticed on my recruiting visit. I feel that the people and community at Marshall are so understanding and helpful. I chose Marshall because it felt like home.”…her biggest role models, “I have two role models that have influenced my life like no other. The first is my grandmother who recently passed away. Her name is Carol Kelly and I called her Nana. She was my best friend and biggest supporter. Nana always told me she is on my shoulder for every race. She never failed to make me smile and teach me things I will never forget. Her memory and spirit live on with me as I will swim for her. My other role model is my mom, Shannon McNamara. My mom has been my coach since I began swimming. She taught me how to love generously, stay determined, and trust in God. My mom always believes in me and she is the most selfless person I know. She is loyal, supportive, and thoughtful like no other. I strive to be like her when I am older. I will forever look up to these two incredible women as I continue to grow.”…after her collegiate career is over she wants to become a swim coach and help the communities that helped shape her…enjoys baking, painting and spending time quality time with friends and family as hobbies outside of sports.
