Matt Adams joined the Thundering Herd track and field coaching staff in August 2018 as assistant coach for throwing events.
Two throwing school records have been broken since Adams took over: the weight throw (Hasana Clark 2019) and the hammer throw (Reneese Batson 2019). Each of those athletes earned All-Conference USA honors in those respective events, including Clark also earning hammer throw All-C-USA honors.
Reneese Batson won the Hammer Throw at the 2019 Conference USA Outdoor Championships, becoming the first Thundering Herd athlete to win an event at the conference meet since 2013.
Adams joined the Thundering Herd having spent 11 years coaching collegiately, including the prior three seasons at Central Michigan University.
In his three seasons in charge of throwers with the Chippewas, Adams coached nine NCAA East Preliminary Championship qualifiers in 19 different events. Under his tutelage, Central Michigan throwers broke two school records, and eight freshman records were broken.
Prior to his time at Central Michigan, he spent four years as assistant coach at Olivet Nazarene (Ill.), coaching three throwers to NAIA National Championships. His throwers set 28 school and 17 conference records, and 19 athletes earned All-American honors.
Adams was a student-athlete himself at Oregon, where he qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary Championships in 2005 in the javelin. Prior to his time at Oregon, he was a four-time National Junior College Athletics Association All-American in the javelin and the discus at Glendale (Ariz.) Community College.
In addition to an associate’s degree from Glendale Community College and a bachelor’s of science in sociology from Oregon, Adams holds a master’s of education from William Woods University, which he earned in 2012. Adams also holds multiple coaching certifications through USA Track & Field and the United States Track Field & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Adams and his wife, Emily, compete in Highland Games, athletic events centered around Scottish culture and throwing of heavy objects such as the caber toss, stone put, and Scottish hammer throw.
