Gunter Brewer is going into his second season as Marshall’s assistant head coach and inside receivers and tight ends coach for head coach Tony Gibson, who hired him in January 2025.

Brewer’s 2025 room production was solid with tight end Toby Payne earning 2025 All-SBC First Team honors and wide receiver Demarcus “Floyd” Lacey finishing as a Second-Team All-SBC selection while being one of the most feared and versatile receivers in the nation.

Payne was the clear-cut leader among tight ends in the SBC, pacing all tight ends within the conference with 36 catches for 387 yards and three touchdowns. The 36 catches were also the second-most on Marshall’s team in 2025 and his 387 yards and three touchdowns were third on the team.

Lacey was one of the biggest yard-producers across all phases in the Sun Belt, amassing 1,133 all-purpose yards on 101 total touches. He led Marshall in receptions (65), receiving yards (769) and touchdown catches (5) while also rushing for 157 yards on 19 carries and serving as one of the SBC’s most dangerous punt returners with 207 yards on 17 returns.

Add in wide receiver Adrian Norton whom also put up big numbers and returns for the 2026 season to the Herd’s receiver room and the future is bright for Brewer’s group.

With more than three decades in coaching, Brewer has extensive experience in the ACC, SEC, Big 12, Big 10 and the NFL, coaching some of the best wide receivers to play the game, including a pair of Biletnikoff Award winners in Pro Football and College Football Hall of Fame receiver and Marshall great Randy Moss, along with Justin Blackmon and Biletnikoff finalist Dez Bryant.  He has coached in 19 bowl games and the 1996 FCS national championship game.

In 2023, under the direction of Brewer, Maryland receivers led the Big 10 in receiving yards. Prior to his time in College Park, he was the wide receivers coach at Louisville from 2019-21 and served as the wide receivers coach for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2018.

Brewer was the Co-Offensive Coordinator/Wide Receivers Coach at North Carolina from 2012-17, where he helped UNC earn the program's first-ever appearance in the ACC Championship Game in 2015. He served one season as the associate head coach/passing game coordinator at Ole Miss (2011) and spent six seasons in various capacities at Oklahoma State (co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach, 2009-10; co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach, 2008; wide receivers coach, 2005-07). Brewer was the wide receivers coach and associate offensive coordinator at Marshall from 1996-99, mentoring Randy Moss to stardom.

In addition to tutoring Moss, Brewer guided Louisville's Tutu Atwell to All-American and First Team All-ACC honors in 2019. At Oklahoma State, he recruited and served as the position coach for Blackmon, a unanimous First-Team All-American who won the Biletnikoff Award presented to the nation's top receiver. He also coached Biletnikoff semifinalist Adarius Bowman with the Cowboys.

As a player, Brewer was a two-year letter-winner as a wide receiver at Wake Forest, where he earned his degree in science and health sports in 1987. In 1989, he was awarded a master's in education with a specialization in exercise physiology from Ole Miss.

Brewer and his wife, Rhonda, have a son, Keaton, and a daughter, Lauren, along with grandchildren, Billy and Elle.
