Herd, Eagles meet at Paulson Stadium in game with big SBC East implications

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Football looks for its third straight win on Saturday when the team travels to take on Georgia Southern in a 3:30 p.m. contest that will be shown on ESPN+ from Paulson Stadium in Statesboro, Ga.

PRE-GAME NOTES
This game will have major Sun Belt Conference East Division implications as the Eagles are the lone team who have one loss in league play heading into this weekend. With a win, Marshall moves into potential contention for the East Division title heading into the final weeks. A Georgia Southern win would have the Eagles firmly in position as the East's only one-loss team.
Marshall's defense forced four turnovers in last week's win over ODU – a stark contrast to the early portion of the season where the Herd had just six turnovers gained in seven games.
Georgia Southern enters the game as one of the nation's top teams in protecting its quarterback, allowing just 7.0 sacks on the year coming into the game.
Marshall kicker Jorge Diaz Nicolas became the Herd's first kicker in history to record five field goals in a game last week at ODU. For his efforts, he was named to the Lou Groza Award's 'Stars of the Week.'
Xayvion Turner-Bradshaw executed one of the most unique plays in football last week when he returned a field goal attempt 100+ yards for a touchdown at the end of the first half of the win over Old Dominion. It was only the 10th recorded time in the last 100 years that someone achieved the feat, but ironically, it was the second in three weeks in college football.
The last three games in this series have been decided by five points or less.
ABOUT MARSHALL
Marshall is now 5-3 on the season and 2-2 in Sun Belt Conference action after a 36-23 win over Old Dominion last week.
The Herd special teams played a big part with kicker Jorge Diaz Nicolas hitting five field goals and Xayvion Turner-Bradshaw returning a "Kick-Six" for a score just before halftime.
Offensively, the Herd's Judah Price and T.J. Lester were a 1-2 punch in the backfield with Price leading the way with 82 yards and Lester rushing for 76 and 2 TDs.
Defensively, the Herd forced four turnovers and got seven tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble from Kenyatta Hardge to lead the way.

ABOUT GEORGIA SOUTHERN
Georgia Southern comes into Saturday's game at 4-4 overall, but 3-1 and atop the SBC East Division standings after a 19-3 win over App State last week.
The Eagles' defense has shined over the last two weeks, allowing just two scores over the last seven quarters of action in a pair of SBC wins.
Quarterback Max Johnson threw for 327 yards last week in a win over App State and kicker Tripp Bryant has seven field goals in the past two games for the Eagles. Receiver Josh Dallas is another weapon the Herd will have to account for.
Defensively, Chance Gamble is a playmaker to watch with 25 tackles, 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble, an interception and seven pass breakups on the year.

SERIES HISTORY
This will be the 11th meeting all-time between the schools with Marshall holding a 6-4 overall lead in the series that began in the I-AA days (now FCS) for both programs. Marshall owned a six-game winning streak in meetings that spanned from 1993 to 2023, but Georgia Southern has won the last two games by a total of six points. The teams have split the series at two games each since the Herd joined the Sun Belt Conference.
