Coach Rick Huckabay arrived at Marshall in 1983 and immediately led the Thundering Herd basketball team into one of its most successful eras of all time. Huckabay came to Marshall from Louisiana State, where he had been an assistant to Dale Brown and helped LSU to the 1981 Final Four, and before that he’d won eight state high school championships in Louisiana. In six seasons as Marshall’s head coach, Huckabay led the Thundering Herd to a 129-59 record, a wins total second at Marshall to only Cam Henderson. His teams won four Southern Conference championships, advancing to three NCAA Tournaments and one NIT, and he won the league Coach of the Year honor in 1984. Huckabay also recruited top level talent to Marshall, including the top two scorers in school history, Skip Henderson and John Taft, both of whom won Southern Conference Player of the Year honors under his tutelage. Huckabay was named the West Virginia College Coach of the Year in 1983. He was inducted into the Louisiana High School Activities Association Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006.
