One of the most decorated basketball players in the history of of West Virginia, Tamar Ulysses Slay followed up a three-time All-State prep career – including two state titles – at Beckley’s Woodrow Wilson High School by scoring 1,792 points as a four-year starter at Marshall from 1998-2002. Slay led Marshall in scoring his last three seasons and his 251 made 3-point field goals remain the most in school history. Slay then became a second-round draft pick by the NBA’s New Jersey Nets and also suited up for the Charlotte Bobcats in the NBA before playing several professional seasons in Europe. After his playing career, Slay became a trainer and personal coach for young basketball players and has also worked for the NBA Players Association. Slay was named the 1997-98 West Virginia high school Player of the Year. He was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012.
