Women's Soccer Downs Toledo 3-0
10/21/2001
HUNTINGTON, W.Va.-Marshall University women?s soccer team defeated the University of Toledo 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Sam Hood Field. The victory was crucial for the Herd as only the top eight teams make it to post-season play in the Mid-American Conference. After Marshall (8-6-1, 5-4-1 MAC) defeated Bowling Green on Friday and Toledo (5-9-1, 4-6-1) lost to Ohio on Friday the teams were virtually deadlocked for the 7th place position in the conference coming into today?s contest.
?This win gets us a step closer to our goal of post season play,? head coach Teresa Patterson said. ?We?re looking forward to playing a good Western (Michigan) team on Friday.?
Marshall took control of the match early, scoring in the first ten minutes of the contest. Amanda McMahon (Stillwater, MN) rifled the ball into the back of the net on a nice run by the Herd. Lindsey Jayjack (Dublin, OH) and Sarah Gupton (Richmond, IN) had assists on the play.
Their next score did not come until the 53rd minute of the match when McMahon struck again, scoring her 2nd goal of the afternoon. Kelly Posey (Manassas, VA) assisted McMahon on the goal.
Danielle Lowther (Grand Haven, MI) added another goal to solidify the win with only five minutes remaining in the match. McMahon had the assist to wrap-up her productive day.
?We stepped it up and we?re finally putting the ball in the back of the net after outshooting everyone all season,? McMahon said.
The Herd dominated the match outshooting the Rockets 20-5 and holding them to only three shots on goal.
Marshall goes on the road next weekend to conclude its conference schedule. They will face the University of Western Michigan at noon on Friday, Oct. 26 and the University of Northern Illinois at noon on Sunday, Oct. 28.
