Men's Soccer Falls to Akron 1-0
10/7/2001
AKRON, Ohio ? Marshall University men?s soccer team fell to four-time defending Mid-American Conference champion Akron 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Lee Jackson Field. Akron improves to 5-3-1 overall, 4-0 in the
MAC. The Thundering Herd drop to 8-3 overall, 2-2 in MAC play.
Akron would get all the offense it would need in the 27th minute thanks to the duo of senior Tim Cooper and freshman Hans Jorgen Haugland. Coming off the left side, Cooper served the ball into the middle where a waiting Haugland hit the bottom right-hand corner of the net past Marshall goalkeeper Jeremy Williams.
From that point on it was a defensive struggle with Akron Goalkeeper Kyle Milligan leading the way. Milligan finished with a season-high six saves, including several crucial shots in the waning minutes of the game. The Thundering Herd put up a flurry of shots in the final six minutes of the game and two key Milligan punch-outs protected the Zips' lead.
Midfielders Dave Spaulding and Chris Donovan led the Marshall attack with six of the team's 15 shots.
Marshall now returns home to face Bowling Green University, Sunday, October 14, at 2:00 p.m.
