Women's Soccer Places Two on MAC First Team

11/9/2001

Athens, Ohio - Marshall womens? soccer players Amanda McMahon and Lauren Scott were named first team All-Mid-American Conference for the 2001 season at the MAC Women?s Soccer Awards Banquet last night.

?Lauren and Amanda are great representatives for us [the women?s soccer team] and the athletic department,? head coach Teresa Patterson said of the awards. ?It is great to know the other coaches in the conference see this and acknowledge it.?

Scott, a sophomore defender from Hillard, Ohio, was the leader of a Thundering Herd defense which led the MAC in goals against, allowing just 0.76 per game in all matches. In addition to her stellar defensive play, Scott scored the game-winning goal against Northern Illinois and posted two assists on the season.

?It?s a great honor,? Scott said. ?It really represents our team. The whole team deserves the awards.?

McMahon, the MAC 2000 Newcomer of the Year, earned first team Mid-American Conference honors for the second consecutive year. The sophomore midfielder from Stillwater, Minn., led Marshall in goals, posting eight in the 2001 campaign. She tallied 12 assists on the season, placing her atop the MAC in that category.

?I was excited that I was able to receive the award along with Lauren,? McMahon said. ?I wish the whole team could have been there competing in the MAC Championship. We had a really great season and we all deserved to be there.?

Marshall was one of only three teams in the conference to be represented on the first team by more than one player. This is a testament to Marshall?s record breaking season. The Herd had its best season in school history finishing 5th in the MAC with an 11-7-1 overall record. Marshall also led the conference in shutouts (6) and was second in goals against average (0.75), assists (24) and shots (203) in conference matches.
