Former Huntington High Golf Standout Transfers To Marshall

6/5/2001

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Marshall University Golf Coach Joe Feaganes announced today that Burke Spensky has transferred from the University of Louisiana-Lafayette and will play golf for the Thundering Herd.

"I tried to recruit Burke out of high school and I am sorry that things did not work out for him in Louisiana, but I am extremely happy to him back at Marshall," said Feaganes. "He and the rest of our incoming recruiting class will have an immediate impact on our golf program."

This past season, Spensky, earned All-Sunbelt Conference honors after recording a 74.3 stroke average on the season for a Ragin'Cajun squad that made its second-consecutive NCAA Regional appearance this past Spring. He has started in 21 consecutive tournaments for UL-Lafayette, dating back to his freshman year, and recorded eight Top-20 finishes as a sophomore.

The Huntington native also qualified for the U.S. Amateur last summer at Guyan Golf & Country Club, and was the second-low amateur behind Pat Carter, finishing fourth overall, at the 1999 West Virginia Open.

"I enjoyed my time at UL and I feel like I learned a lot about myself and my golf game," said Spensky. "I never realized how much I loved Huntington and Marshall until I moved a thousand miles away. I'm so happy to get this opportunity to come home."

Spensky, was two time West Virginia Class AAA All-State selection at Huntington High School and helped lead the Highlanders to State Championships in 1998 and 1999. His father, Bill Spenske was a teammate of head coach Joe Feaganes at Marshall in the 1960's.

Spensky joins Matt O'Dell, Drew Whitten, and Brad Tweel as Marshall's incoming recruits for the Fall of 2001.
