Men's Soccer Opens 2001 Season Monday

8/17/2001

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.-The Marshall University men?s soccer team opens play with an exhibition match against the University of Rio Grande at Sam Hood Field Monday, August 20. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Admission to the match is free.

Marshall?s men return nine starters from a squad that finished the 2000 season 14-5-1 and shared the Mid-American Conference title. The 2000 MAC Player of the Year and 2001 CollegeSoccer.com Preseason All-America Byron Carmichael returns for his junior season after posting school records for goals (18) and points (41).

?The upcoming season should be an exciting one,? Marshall soccer coach Bob Gray said. ?The exhibition with Rio Grande provides an opportunity to play an experienced, physical team. It will also give us a chance to experiment and help develop our team chemistry on the field before the start of the season.?

Marshall will open the 2001 regular season with a home match against Cleveland State University at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 1. Another home match against High Point University follows at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 5.
