Men's Soccer Downs Cleveland State in Opener

Huntington, WV- Marshall University men?s soccer team defeated Cleveland State Universtiy 3-2 in their season opener. Cleveland State (0-1) scored early in the first half, but Marshall (1-0) came out firing in the second half scoring 3 times. Pre-season All-American candidate Byron Carmichael (Lumberton, NJ) scored the first goal of the 2001 season for the Herd.
?It?s a win, a good win. There?s a lot to build on and I was very pleased to watch how we controlled the ball,? said Marshall head coach Bob Gray. ?I felt we controlled 80% of the game, but give Cleveland State credit, they hung in there.?
Misha Levkov scored the first goal of the match for the Vikings off a break away in the 14th minute. Marshall answered early in the second half with two back to back goals by Carmichael and Brent Sobczak (Brandon, FL). The Thundering Herd went up 3-1 in the 65th minute with a goal from Jared Dombroski (Pickerington, OH). The final goal of the match came in the 70th minute when Cleveland State?s John Schaller put it past the keeper.
Marshall outshot the Vikings, 22-7.
Marshall?s next match is Wednesday, September 5, at 4:00 p.m. versus High Point University. Admission for the match is $5 for adults and $3 for children.
