Tennis Drops Close Decision to UVA

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-The Marshall women?s tennis team was defeated today by the University of Virginia, 3-4. The Cavaliers are ranked as the #40 team in the country.

UVA won the doubles point get a 1-0 lead on the Herd. At no. 1 doubles it was Anna Mitina (senior/Sochi, Russia) and Alice Sukner (sophomore/Pittsburgh, Pa.) defeated Henriette Williams and Jennifer Tuchband, 8-6. The Cavaliers then won the next two matches. In the no. 2 spot it was Dora Bechliwanis and Marta Bechliwanis defeated Jessica Johnson (sophomore, Sewickley, Pa.) and Danielle Hock (freshman, England), 8-6. Amy O?Donnell and Christine Kim defeated Ashley Kroch (sophomore, Louisville, Ky.) and Lille Nzudie (freshman, Cameroon), 9-8, 9-7, at no. 3 doubles.

In singles competition at the no. 1 spot Johnson defeated Williams; 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. At no. 2 singles, Tuchband defeated Mitinia; 6-4, 7-6. Sukner claimed the no.3 spot by defeating O?Donnell; 7-5, 6-3. Nzudie was defeated by D. Bechliwanis; 6-3, 6-4, to claim the no.4 singles position. At no. 5 singles, M. Bechliwanis defeated Hock; 6-3, 6-0. Joelle Good defeated Laura James; 6-2, 6-2 to win the no. 6 singles position.

?Today was a close, tough match,? said head coach Laurie Mercer. ?UVA is a good team and we had match point four times and just couldn?t pull it out. We have to put the loss behind us and concentrated on a very good William & Mary team for tomorrow?s match.?

The Herd now falls to 0-2 on the season. They will compete against William & Mary tomorrow.
