Men's Soccer Drops Close Contest to Virginia Tech

Kirg Gibson celebrates Marshall's lone goal in the game against Virginia Tech

Huntington, W.Va.-The Marshall University men?s soccer tem grabbed a late lead, however, was unable to hold on as they fell to Virginia Tech 2-1. The loss drops their overall record to 5-7-0 while Virginia Tech moves to 7-5-1.

?We are definitely disappointed with the loss,? head coach Bob Gray said. ?We grabbed the lead and were unable to hold on. We need to begin to finds ways to finish off opponents after taking a lead. However, I was pleased with the progress we made over the weekend compared to our last few games.?

After a scoreless first half, Kirk Gibson gave the Thundering Herd a 1-0 lead in the 68th minute when he took a pass from Robert Ngumire and blasted the ball into the lower-right hand corner of the net. The goal by Gibson was the first of his career.

Virginia Tech answered just four minutes later to tie the game. Peer Rogge scored when he headed a John Havas corner kick past the Marshall goalie.

The Hokies took the lead for good in the 78th minute when Ken Jonmaire blasted a kick from 15 yards out past a diving Jeremy Williams to make the score 2-1.

Marshall threatened a couple more times but Virginia Tech goalie Chase Harrison was able to preserve the victory.

Williams made five saves for the Thundering Herd in the loss.

Marshall out-shot the Hokies 15-10.

The Thundering Herd will return to action on Friday, October 18, when they take on defending Mid-American Conference champion Kentucky at 7:00 p.m. in Lexington, Ky.
