CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The Marshall University men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to the Cavaliers of the University of Virginia in front of 1,348 spectators Wednesday evening at UVA?s Kl?ckner Stadium. The non-conference loss dropped the Herd to 4-5-0 on the season as they remain 1-0 in the Mid-American Conference.
UVa's Joe Vide scored just 12:40 into the match when Alecko Eskandarian took a corner kick and placed it in front of the net to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead. Vide's goal eventually resulted in the game-winning score. Eskandarian gave Virginia a 2-0 advantage at the 30:00 mark with the help of Cavaliers Ryan Kelly and Jacob LeBlanc.
The score remained 2-0 until well after the half as the Herd stepped things up on defense, but at the 64:35 mark Eskandarian scored his second goal of the match off of a penalty kick. Marshall could not get things going offensively and fell by the final of 3-0.
Thundering Herd goalkeeper Matt Salmon (Worthington, OH) recorded seven saves and Jeremy Williams (Wheelersburg, OH) had three saves in goal, combining to make ten saves in the match. UVa goalkeepers David Comfort and Brett Mayer-Aschhoff each gathered two saves apiece between the pipes.
Marshall was outshot 25-8 in the match. Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) powerhouse Virginia improved their record to 5-4-0 with the win.
The Herd will return to action this Sunday, October 6th at 1:00 p.m. on Marshall?s Sam Hood Field as they take on MAC rival Buffalo.
