Men's Soccer Loses in Double Overtime to Bowling Green
10/20/2002
Bowling Green, Ohio-The Marshall University men?s soccer team scored late in the game, but was unable to hold on as they dropped a 2-1 decision to Bowling Green in double overtime. Marshall?s Byron Carmichael scored the lone goal for the Thundering Herd, giving him 121 points for his career, breaking the previous Mid-American Conference record of 119 held by Steve Klein of Bowling Green.
?This was an extremely disappointing loss,? head coach Bob Gray said. ?We controlled the entire match but were unable to put them away.?
After a scoreless first half, Carmichael gave the Thundering Herd a late 1-0 lead when he scored unassisted in the 78th minute. Carmichael was able to control a loose ball at midfield and dribble around a couple of defenders before blasting the ball past the BGSU goalie. He now holds two MAC career records, goals scored and points scored.
It did not take long for Bowling Green to respond. Paul Seip took a pass from Matt Leardini and beat Marshall goalie Jeremy Williams in the 79th minute to tie the score at 1-1.
After a scoreless first overtime, Seip gave the Falcons the win in the 102nd minute when he scored from the top of the penalty box after passes from Ben Monnette and Deryk Freudman.
The win improves the Falcons record to 3-10-0, 3-1-0 in conference, while Marshall falls to 6-8-0, 2-2-0 in conference.
In the game, Marshall out-shot the Falcons 11-6.
Williams made one save for the Thundering Herd and took the loss. David DeGraff managed four saves on the afternoon for the Falcons and was able to get the victory.
Marshall returns to action on Friday, October 25, when they take on Northern Illinois University at 7:00 p.m. at Sam Hood Field. The home portion will conclude the following Tuesday, October 29, when they face West Virginia University at 7:00 p.m. for Senior Day.
