10/3/2002
HUNTINGTON, W. Va.?The Marshall University volleyball team takes on preseason MAC Tournament favorite Eastern Michigan Friday night in the Henderson Center, the second of three matches in four days. The task won?t be easy for the Thundering Herd, as the Eagles come to Huntington with a 13-1 overall record, 2-0 in MAC play, with their only loss coming against nationally ranked Eastern Washington in their first match of the season. Marshall is riding a five match win streak, their longest since 1999, and an 11-4 overall record, 2-0 in conference play.
MU improved to 2-0 in conference play Wednesday night with a dramatic 3-1 (34-32, 30-20, 29-31, 31-29) victory over the Ohio Bobcats. The Herd snapped a four match Bobcat win streak in the career series. Also, it marked the best start in conference play since 1998, and the best start overall since 1980, when Marshall was 11-4 after 15 games.
Eastern Michigan has won 13 straight matches, with their latest coming against Miami, the Herd?s opponent on Saturday night. Eight of those wins have come in three games. Eagle outside hitter Jennifer Nighswander was named the MAC-West Volleyball Player of the Week and the MAC Women?s Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of September 30. She averaged 3.91 kills, 4.82 digs, and 0.36 blocks per game in EMU?s two wins.
Game time is set for 7 p.m. tomorrow night in the Henderson Center. Admission is free.
