MU Falls To Eastern Michigan In Three Games

10/4/2002

HUNTINGTON, W. Va.?The Eastern Michigan Eagles defeated the Marshall Thundering Herd, 3-0 (28-30, 24-30, 25-30) in Mid-American Conference volleyball action Friday night. The Eagles move to 14-1, 3-0 in conference play, while the Herd drops to 11-5, 2-1 in the MAC. EMU snapped a five match MU win streak with the win.

?We ran into the most consistent team in the league tonight,? said coach Mitch Jacobs. ?They are strong at every position, and they are a good representation of what this league should be. But, I?m proud of my kids for hanging in there against them.?

Game one was the closest of the match for Marshall, as both teams were involved in a see-saw game until the very end. With the score tied at 28, Heidi Kuethe (Normal, Ill.) served the ball in the net, and then junior Nichol Michal?s attack on the next EMU serve went wide to give Eastern the game.

EMU took the momentum from the Herd in game one, and used it to their advantage in the subsequent games. With Marshall leading 10-7 in game two, the Eagles took the next seven out of eight points to take the lead 14-11. The Herd never got closer than two points the rest of the game.

Game three also belonged to the Eagles. After the score was tied at five, Eastern Michigan took control and cruised to their third win in MAC play.

Marshall was led by Amber Sims (Ney, Ohio), who had 14 kills, two errors, in 18 total attacks (.667). Isabell Anderer (Sinsheim, Germany) had nine kills, while Kuethe also had nine kills. Anderer led MU in digs with 16.

EMU was paced by Katie Wagenmaker, who posted an incredible .619 hitting percentage (.15-2-21). Bree Hickman had ten kills, and last week?s West Division Player of the Week Jennifer Nighswander had 12 kills. Setter Camila Olaio posted a double-double with 20 digs and 34 assists.

Marshall returns to action tomorrow night against Miami in the Henderson Center. Game time is slated for a 7 p.m. start. Admission is free.
