Marshall Takes Out Chippewas In Three Games
11/2/2002
Huntington, W.Va.--The Marshall University volleyball team defeated the Central Michigan University Chippewas, 3-0 (30-25, 30-22, 30-25). The Herd improved to 17-7, 8-3 in Mid-American Conference play, while the Chippewas slipped to 9-16 overall, 5-7 in conference play.
?We did a nice job carrying our momentum from last night into today,? said head coach Mitch Jacobs. ?I?m glad we were able to beat them in three sets because of our long match last night. If it would have gone four sets, you would probably see some of our fatigue while they?d be getting fresher.?
Marshall sailed through the first two games of the day, only trailing twice early in game one. In game one, the Thundering Herd used two five point spurts to put the Chips away, 30-25, while in game two, Marshall won six out of seven midway through the game to take the second set, 30-22.
Game three was a tight early with several lead changes in the first 22 points. Junior Nicole Michal (Louisville, Ky.) then put the team on her back, as she served the team to four points in a row to make the score 15-12. CMU responded with a run of their own, and four points later, the Chips held a 16-15 lead. With Central Michigan leading 18-17, the Herd ran off four out of the next five points to give them an insurmountable cushion the rest of the way.
The Thundering Herd defense stifled the Chips all night, holding them to a .097 percentage (39-26-134).
Marshall had outstanding days from senior Grace Jones (Lakeland, Fla.) and Michal. Jones had 11 kills and only three errors in 24 total attempts for a .333 hitting percentage on the day. Michal also had 11 kills hit for a .321 percentage (11-2-28). Heidi Kuethe (Normal, Ill.) hit .500 (7-1-12) and had 12 digs and six blocks, while Ashley Barnard (Maumee, Ohio) and Jodi Fick (Fremont, Ohio) each added ten digs apiece.
Central Michigan had three players with seven kills (Kendra Devries, Emily Lovejoy, Tamara Fant). Ali McCrite led the Chips defensively with 14 kills.
Marshall continues MAC play with a game at rival Ohio on Wednesday. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
