Marshall Golf and "Birdies For Wishes"

2/22/2002

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? The Marshall University golf team will be a participant in a program call ?Birdies For Wishes?, which will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern West Virginia.

This joint venture, sponsored by The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and The National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA), allows men?s and women?s golf programs across the country to solicit pledges with the proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish Chapter located nearest the participating university. Thus, donations help the immediate area.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern West Virginia, located in Charleston, serves 23 counties including Cabell, Wayne, Putnam, Kanawha, Mason, Lincoln, Logan, Mingo and Boone.

PGA star David Duval is the national spokesman for the GCAA, and LPGA star Nancy Lopez is the national spokeswoman for the NGCA. Both are former college All-Americans.

Donations and pledges are based on the total number of birdies the Marshall golf team makes during the spring season. Marshall coach Joe Feaganes estimates that number will be between 250 and 300.

?Our golf team is very pleased to have the opportunity to participate in this worthwhile charity initiative,? said Feaganes. ?Hopefully there are a lot of people out there with big hearts who will help us as college golf steps forward to make a difference in the life of a child.?

The Marshall golf team will pass out pledge forms prior to The Herd?s final home basketball game on Wednesday, February 27, versus Central Michigan. Pledge forms are also available at area golf courses.

Additional information on ?Birdies for Wishes? may be obtained by calling the Marshall golf office at 304-696-5401 or the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern West Virginia at 304-345-6568.
