Whitten Leads Marshall Golfers in First Round of Furman Intercollegiate

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Freshman Drew Whitten fired a team-low 74 to lead the Thundering Herd golf team in the first round of the Furman Intercollegiate Friday. Marshall currently stands tied for 13th out of 24 teams following the opening round.
Whitten, a Hurricane, W.Va., native, is tied for 17th out of 128 golfers after the first of three rounds on the par 72 Furman University Golf Course. East Carolina?s Joanathan Hill and Furman?s David Sligh currently sit atop the leader board with three-under par 69?s.
Furman leads the field after day one with a first round score of 291. The Paladins are followed by East Carolina at 293, Coastal Carolina and Wofford at 294, and Western Carolina at 298.
A total of 13 golfers fired even par or better Friday, placing all within three strokes of the lead.
The second round of the Furman Intercollegiate is slated to begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, unless a frost delay forces an 11 a.m. shotgun start. The final round will be played on Sunday.
