Tennis Team Defeats UNC-C and Akron

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University tennis team defeated UNC-C and Akron today.

Against UCC-C the Herd struck early over UNC-C winning all three doubles matches and claiming the doubles point. The number one duo of Anna Mitina and Alice Sukner finished with a 8-0 victory over Alice Hansen and Laura Swain. Jessica Johnson and Ashley Kroh got a 8-1 victory over Jana Cucciniello and Jennifer Hatch at no. 2 doubles. Joelle Good and Danielle Hock claimed the no.3 position by defeating Courtney Clifford and Stacie Lunders, 8-1.

In singles action, Marshall claimed all six matches. At no. 1 singles, Johnson finished with a 6-0, 6-2 defeat over Hansen. Mitina defeated Swain at the no. 2 position6-2, 6-0. Sukner got a victory at the no. 3 spot by defeating Cucciniello, 6-2, 6-1. Nzudi finished 6-3, 6-0 over Hatch at the No. 4. Kroh defeated Hastings 6-2, 6-1 at no. 5 singles. Hock defeated Cliff at No. 6, 6-3, 6-1.

In the Akron match the Herd took the 1-0 lead after claiming all three doubles matches. Mitina and Sukner defeated I. Strembitsky and D. Seratini at the no. 1 position, 8-2. The no.2 spot was won by the duo Johnson and Kroh, 8-0 over A. Rojas-Serpa and J. Miller. Hock and Good defeated M. Price and C. Brenkus at no. 3 doubles, 8-3.

In singles action, Marshall claimed five of six singles matches. Nzudi finished first at No. 4 with a defeat over Brenkus, 6-0, 6-0 followed secondly by Mitina with a 6-0, 3-0 win over Miller at No. 2. Sukner at No. 3 defeated Seratini 6-1,6-2. Good claimed No. 5 singles by defeating Rojas-Serpa, 6-1, 6-1. At the No. 6 spot Kroh claimed the victory defeating Price, ,6-0, 6-1. Last off the court for the Herd was Johnson who lost her first set, 2-6 and then battled back to claim the second set, 6-4 but loss the final set, 3-6 to Strembitsky.

The Herd is now 10-4 overall and 2-0 in MAC play.

Next up for the Herd is are two conference road matches at Toledo and Eastern Michigan on Friday, March 29 and Saturday, March 30.
