Golf Travels to UK/Johnny Owens Invitational
3/28/2002
Marshall University?s men?s golf team will participate in the 18-team Johnny Owens Invitational at the University of Kentucky Friday and Saturday.
The Johnny Owens Invitational is a 54-hole tournament, with 36 holes to be played on Friday and the final 18 slated for Saturday. The Johnny Owens again will be played at UK?s home course, the University Club of Kentucky in Lexington.
The field includes: Akron, Ball State, Eastern Kentucky, Kentucky, Louisville, Marshall, Miami, Morehead State, Murray State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio, Purdue, Western Kentucky, Wisconsin, Wright State, Xavier, and Youngstown State.
Marshall?s lineup consists of Aaron Williams, Brian Perry, Burke Spensky, Drew Whitten, and Tim Lynch. Whitten, a freshman from Hurricane, W.Va., is coming off the best performance of his young collegiate career, a seven over par 223 that gave him a 24th place finish at last weekend?s Furman Intercollegiate.
Marshall has had its share of success at the UK/Johnny Owens Invitational. In 2000, the Thundering Herd?s Sam O?Dell won the individual title and in 1993 the Herd took the team title.
This will be the Herd?s final meet before hosting the 33rd annual Marshall Invitational next weekend at the Guyan Golf & Country Club in Huntington.
