Golf Team Finishes Strong at Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Marshall University?s golf team shot a four under par 280 in the third round to finish 12th in the Johnny Owens Invitational Saturday.
The Thundering Herd?s final round score was 21 strokes better than its second round total of 301 and was second only to tournament champion Purdue?s third round low of 278. The strong finished helped MU jump five spots from 17th place and gain momentun heading into next weekend?s Marshall Invitational.
Marshall?s move was spurred by junior Burke Spensky. The Huntington native recorded a tournament third round low of 66 (-5) after recording 77?s in each of the first two rounds. Spensky finished the tournament tied fo 29th at 220. Senior Aaron Williams (New Boston, Ohio) added a third round score of 70 (-1) to finish tied for 16th at 217, while Drew Whitten (Hurricane, W.Va.) and Brian Perry (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) recorded third round scores of 71 and 73, respectively.
Purdue walked away with the team championship behind Shiv Kapur (3rd) and Lee Williamson?s (4th) top five finishes. The Boilermakers shot a tournament-low 278 as a team in the final round to pass up opening-day leader Kentucky and take the title.
Kentucky?s John Holmes won medalist honors with a six under par 207. Morehead State?s Nicholas Atzinger finished second at 209.
Marshall will host the 33rd annual Marshall Invitational at the Guyan Golf & Country Club next weekend in Huntington. A field of 20 teams from across the region will converge at Guyan for the two-day event that will begin Friday.
