AKRON, Ohio ? Marshall shot rounds of 301 and 302 to finish in 14th place after day one at Firestone Country Club and the FirstEnergy Intercollegiate men?s golf tournament Saturday.

The Mid-American Conference, led by Miami and Toledo, took charge of the first round; but Big Ten teams Penn State and Iowa rallied during the second round to set up what should be an exciting finish tomorrow. Miami?s Eric Phipps got hot on Firestone North Course (par 72) and carded a seven-under par 65 to lead the individual standings at 136, five strokes better than Penn State?s Andy Latowski at 141.
