Golf Finishes 15th at FirstEnergy Intercollegiate

AKRON, Ohio- The Toledo Rockets, carrying the Mid-American Conference banner, defeated Penn State in a one-hole playoff to capture the 2002 FirstEnergy Intercollegiate men?s golf championship at Firestone Country Club. Marshall concluded its regular season with a 15th place finish.
Miami?s Eric Phipps fired a five-under-par 211 for the tournament to claim individual honors.
Five teams went into the final round within six strokes atop the leader board. Penn State was the Day #1 leader; but Toledo?s final round of 290 coupled with Penn State?s 294 sent the two teams? golfers back out to the first tee.
Marshall shot rounds of 301, 302, and 302 to finish at 905. The Herd?s top individual, Burke Spensky, finished tied for 15th. The Huntington native shot rounds of 70, 77, and 72 to finish with a score of 219.
The Thundering Herd will take next weekend off before traveling to Columbus and the Mid-American Conference Championship, May 2-4, at the Medallion Club.
