Marshall University volleyball coach Mitch Jacobs announced today that senior Heidi Kuethe and junior Ashley Barnard have been selected as team captains for the 2002 season.

?After having been here for the past month and working with the team, these two have stood out for their effort and leadership,? Jacobs said. ?They have really impressed me with their dedication.?

Kuethe, an outside hitter from Normal, Ill., averaged 1.89 kills per game last year to go with 1.73 digs. She battled back from a devastating shoulder injury suffered during her sophomore season. She was named to the MAC All-Freshman team in 1999.

?As a senior, and a returning captain, Heidi truly represents the work ethic and the vocal leadership that you need in a captain,? Jacobs said. ?She has proven that she will work hard, as she did in coming back from her injury. She really worked to learn the new system and will be a solid captain for the team.?

Barnard, a defensive specialist from Maumee, Ohio, averaged 2.2 digs per game last season and had 17 service aces.

?Ashley represents the heart that this team will be demanded to play with,? Jacobs said. ?I can?t imagine another player in the Mid-American Conference with as much heart as she has.?

The Marshall volleyball team has completed it?s spring season. The team will return in August to begin preparations for its first season under Jacobs.

?We are proud to name these two players as captains,? Jacobs said. ?As the season draws closer in August we will select one overall team floor captain. It could be one of these two, or it could be someone else. It will be decided on by a vote of the players and coaches prior to the start of the season.?
