WESTERVILLE, Ohio- The Marshall University men?s golf team shot an opening round 301 Thursday and stands in sixth place following the first of four rounds at the Mid-American Conference Golf Championships.
Huntington native Burke Spensky carded a one over par 73 at the Medallion Club to lead the Thundering Herd. The junior currently stands tied for 7th, three strokes behind tournament leader Kevin Koronowa of Toledo.
At one-over as a team after the first round, the University of Toledo owns a seven-stroke edge on the rest of the field. Rocket senior Kevin Kornowa turned in a two-under par 70 to lead the field and pace the Rockets, who posted 289 strokes as a team.
Just three strokes separate the next three teams. Ohio University is in second place at eight-over par 296, while the Kent State Golden Flashes sit just one stroke behind the Bobcats (297) in third place. Miami University is in fourth place with 298 strokes.
Adam Balls (Bowling Green), Eric Phipps (Miami), Jeff Mankiewicz (Eastern Michigan), and Sean McTernan (Toledo) are all tied at one-under par 71, while Ball States? Dan Witt is in sixth place at even par.
Play continues with 36 holes on Friday. The tournament?s second round starts at 8 a.m.
