HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University men?s soccer coach Bob Gray announced today the signing of two more players for the 2002 season. Theron Lockett, a senior from Stafford High School in Stafford, Virginia, and Kirk Gibson, a senior from Allen High School in Allen, Texas, have both signed national letters of intent to play with the Thundering Herd.
?Both are key recruits who will add depth and push the upper classmen for playing time,? Gray said.
Lockett, a talented outside defender, has played in the Virginia Olympic Development Program. In addition, he was a member of the Stafford Shadow. He chose Marshall over William & Mary.
?Theron is extremely good in the air and is extremely tall and strong,? Gray said. ?He will be able to add some offense from his position in the backfield next year.?
Gibson, an attacking midfielder, is a member of the Dallas Texans Super Club, the current state champions. Gibson chose Marshall over Florida International University and Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis.
?Kirk is great with the ball and his feet,? Gray said. ?He likes to take people on and has great vision. He will look to add a spark to our midfield play next season.?
With the signing of Gibson and Lockett, MU has now signed ten players for the 2002 season. The others are Jeremy Ash (Cinnaminson, N.J.), Bryan Beam (Westchester, Pa.), J.R. Benton (Midlothian, Va.), Mike Bourassa (Victoria, Canada), Johnathon Buxton (Virginia Beach, Va.), Granit Caushaj (Chicago, Ill.), Clayton Cochran (Morristown, Pa.) and Graham Prather (Midlothian, Va.).
Marshall finished last season 12-7-0 and lost in the semifinals of the Mid-American Conference tournament to the University of Akron. Last season, the Thundering Herd received their highest ranking in school history when they were ranked 23rd by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
