Marshall Women Fall Short Against Xavier

9/15/2002

  • Mu vs. XU

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? The Marshall University women?s soccer team dropped a non-conference contest to Xavier University Sunday on a soggy Sam Hood Field, 3-2.

?Xavier had one of the most effective counter attacks we?ve seen,? head coach Teresa Patterson said. ?We made the adjustments we needed to make in the 2nd half. We just have to learn from our mistakes and take that into our next match.?

Xavier?s Lauren Giesting started the scoring as she netted back to back goals in the 32nd and 35th minute of the match to put the Musketeers (3-2-0) up 2-0. Angie Scarlato added to the lead in the opening minutes of the 2nd half, scoring on a penalty kick.

Marshall (2-2-2, 0-0-1) got things going in the 61st minute as Lindsey Stelter (Dayton, OH) placed the ball into the back of the net off a nice pass from Stacy Wells(Monroe,OH). Stelter immediately returned the favor as she assisted Ashley Schillig (New Albany, OH) on a perfectly placed shot over the Musketeer goal keeper. The Herd kept the pressure on, but couldn?t pull out the victory, falling 3-2.

MU outshot the Musketeers 16 to 12 and accumulated seven shots on goal. Herd goal keeper Sarah Barber (Cincinnati, OH) had five saves on the contest.

Marshall will return to action at Sam Hood Field on Friday, September 20th taking on Western Michigan University at 1:00 p.m.
