Marshall Volleyball Readies For Intrastate Rival West Virginia
9/20/2002
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? The Marshall University volleyball team opens their 2002 home season Saturday night with a match against West Virginia University. The Herd, who have already matched last year?s win total of six, face a Mountaineer team with a record of 3-6. WVU leads the all-time series 26-8, with the first meeting coming in 1974.
The Thundering Herd, 6-4 on the season, are coming off a runner up finish last weekend at the Medical Mutual Cleveland State Volleyball Invitational. Marshall beat Elon, St. Francis(PA), and Tennessee Tech in their first three matches, but fell to host Cleveland State in four hard fought games on Saturday night. Isabelle Anderer (Sinsheim, Germany) was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts. The junior outside hitter had 50 kills and 53 digs for the tournament, including 42 digs on Saturday.
The Mountaineers just recently snapped a six-match slide with a win over St. Peters on September 14th. Like the Herd, WVU has faced some mighty competition, with two of their losses coming against Big 12 powerhouse Missouri and Alabama, who also downed Marshall earlier in the season. West Virginia is led by Stephanie Zolna, with 107 kills, and Julie Hockenson, who sports the Mountaineers? best hitting percentage at .357 (87-21-185).
Saturday?s match begins at 7 p.m. and admission to the Henderson Center is free.
