Carmichael now holds the career point mark at Marshall with 106 |
Lexington, Kent.-The Marshall University men?s soccer team fell to Coastal Carolina University 4-1 in action at the University of Kentucky Traditional Bank Invitational. Byron Carmichael scored the lone goal for the Thundering Herd. Carmichael?s goal gives him 106 points for his career, a new Marshall career record. With the loss, the Thundering Herd fall to 3-3-0 on the season while Coastal Carolina improves to 6-0-1 with the victory. The game was delayed for 20 minutes in the second half due to rain.
Coastal Carolina got on the board early when Joseph Ngwenya scored an unassisted goal in the 13th minute to give CCU a 1-0 lead.
Marshall answered right back when Carmichael took a pass from Robert Ngumire and scored from 18 yards out to tie the game. Jared Dombrowski also added an assist on the play. The goal allowed Carmichael to break Andy Zulauf?s record of 105 points in a Marshall uniform.
The tie did not last long, however, as Mubarike Chisoni took a pass from Ngwenya and struck the lower left-hand side of the goal in the 25th minute to give Coastal Carolina the lead for good.
After taking a 2-1 lead into the half, CCU expanded the lead to 3-1 when Mike Littlefield headed a cross from Ngwenya into the back of the net in the 48th minute.
Ngwenya tallied his second goal of the game in the 84th minute to give CCU the decisive 4-1 victory.
Marshall out-shot Coastal Carolina 11-9 for the game. Matt Salmon made two saves in goal for the Thundering Herd and took the loss. Aaron Sanders recorded three saves and got the victory for CCU.
Marshall will return to action on Sunday, September 22, when they take on Cleveland State University at noon in the second round of the Traditional Bank Invitational.
