9/24/2002

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? The Marshall Thunderng Herd (8-4), powered by senior Heidi Kuethe (Normal, Ill.), defeated the Morehead State Eagles (6-8) 30-24, 22-30, 30-25, and 30-27 Tuesday night in the Henderson Center. The win snapped a four match win streak for the Eagles.

Kuethe notched her fifth straight 10+ kills match, adding 14 kills to her season total of 110. She also managed to be the most accurate hitter in the match, hitting for a .444 percentage (2 errors, 27 attacks). Marshall has now won eight of their last nine.

?We showed patience tonight,? said first year coach Mitch Jacobs. ?Morehead State is exceptional at breaking teams down to the point of frustration. We showed enough patience tonight to where they got frustrated.?

Marshall opened game one on a 6-1 run and held on to win the match 30-24. The Eagles made it close at 9-8, but MU scored four out of the next five points to give them momentum for the rest of the game.

Game two saw the Eagles take advantage of poor execution by the Herd, who only hit .093 (12-8-43) for the game. A 9-8 Marshall lead quickly became 15-9 in Morehead?s favor, and from there, the Eagles cruised the rest of the way to a 30-22 victory.

Games three and four were nip and tuck until the Herd put together late runs to put the match away.

Along with Kuethe, Amber Sims (Ney, Ohio), Isabell Anderer (Sinsheim, Germany), and Tracey King (Miami, Fla.) posted double-digit kills. Freshman setter Katie Stein (Sussex, Wis.) posted her first double-double of her career with 56 assists and ten digs.

MU returns to action this weekend in Buffalo, N.Y. Friday, the Herd takes on Canisius, and on Saturday, Marshall opens conference play with a showdown with Buffalo. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
