Thundering Herd Take Care Of Canisius College In Three Games

9/27/2002

Buffalo, N.Y.?The Thundering Herd volleyball team has now won nine out of ten matches, with the latest being a 3-0 win over the Canisius College Golden Griffens tonight in Buffalo. The Herd improve to 9-4 on the season, while Canisius drops to 2-12.

?It was nice to get a match under us after the travel day on Thursday,? said Marshall coach Mitch Jacobs. ?Canisius is an improved team, and they?ve hung in there against some good teams. So, it?s good to get a win in three games. Now, we?ve got to turn our attention to conference play and Buffalo.?

The Herd took game one 30-22 comfortably from the Golden Griffens. Tracey King (Miami, Fla.) led Marshall with seven kills. Heidi Kuethe (Normal, Ill.) was next in kills with four, while Jodi Fick (Fremont, Ohio), normally MU?s starting libero, registered five digs from the outside hitter position. Marshall hit .333 (19-6-39) as a team for the game.

Game two was a see-saw affair, as the lead changed hands four times before Marshall outlasted Canisius by another score of 30-22. With the Thundering Herd leading 15-13, the Golden Griffens strung four consecutive points together to take a 17-13 lead. However, the lead was short-lived, as Fick jump-served the Herd to eight straight points and a 23-17 advantage. MU scored the last 15 out of 20 points to close out game two. Marshall again had a great game from the floor, hitting .378 (18-4-37), compared to the Golden Griffs? .150 (11-5-40).

After a 1-1 tie in game three, the Herd went on an 8-2 run to put the match away. The Golden Griffs got no closer than five points the rest of the way. MU had their best hitting game of the match, knocking down 21 kills, with only three errors, in 39 attempts (.462). The Herd?s defense was stellar, holding Canisius to a .032 percentage.

Kuethe led four players who hit .400 or better with a .529 percentage (11-2-17). The other three were King (.423), Nicole Michal (.467.), and Katie Stein (.400). Stein (Sussex, Wis.) also had 39 assists on the night.

The Herd open conference play against the University at Buffalo tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
