HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- The Northwest Ohio portion of the Mid-American Conference will present themselves as the final test for Marshall women?s soccer as the Herd does battle with Toledo and Bowling Green this weekend.
Marshall (2-13-1; 2-8-0 MAC) will take on the Rockets of Toledo on Friday at 7 p.m. before the BGSU Falcons fly into Sam Hood Field on Sunday at Noon.
The games are part of a soccer filled weekend at Marshall University, with double headers on both days with the men?s team.
"We are trying to end the season on a good note," head coach Chris Kane said. "We are in the position now to play the spoiler."
Sunday will also be Senior Day for Marshall?s seven seniors Danielle Lowther, Sarah Gupton, Stacy Wells, Lindsay Stelter, Ellerie Karl, Allison Jayjack and Lauren Scott.
All games this weekend at Sam Hood Field are free to the public and will be broadcast via the World Wide Web at www.marshall.edu/wmul.
Herd Notes
Woods Still At Top
Goalkeeper junior Ashleigh Woods (Penfield, NY) remains atop the MAC saves per game leader list. Her 6.80 saves per game is nearly a whole save more than any other goalie in the conference. Woods is also third in overall saves with 68.
Hemmerich Leads the Way
Sophomore Cara Hemmerich (Dublin, Ohio) continues her stellar second-year campaign. The 5?7? forward leads the Herd in goals (3), points (7) and shots (20).
Seniors Say Goodbye
Seven Marshall seniors will take the field for the last time in the Green and White on Sunday against Bowling Green.
The senior class of 2003, Lowther, Wells, Karl, Stelter, Scott, Gupton and Jayjack have record of 27-39-5 and played a pivotal role in the Herd?s 2001 record-breaking season as Marshall recorded 11 wins, the most in program history.
The Opponent
The Toledo Rockets sit just above the Herd in the MAC standings with a record of 7-9-0 (4-6-0 MAC).
Toledo kept their tournament hopes alive with a 1-0 shutout of Buffalo last weekend.
The Rockets are led by Melissa Lesage, who is fourth in the MAC in goals with eight and have recently added two new players to their roster.
Softball players Tracey Lehman and Gina Muratori have filled in for recent injuries to Rocket goalies Molly Patterson and Jen Whipple. Lehman is 2-0 in her first two starts in the net.
The all-time series sits in favor of the Rockets at 4-1. The Herd fell to Toledo last season 1-2.
The Bowling Green Falcons are 6-10-2 (4-4-1 MAC) and will visit Ohio on Friday before arriving to Sam Hood Field on Sunday.
The Falcons challenged Big Ten opponent Michigan State down to the wire on Wednesday but fell 3-2 to the Spartans.
BGSU is led by sophomore sensation Samantha Meister, who received a pair of national honors last week, as she was named to the Soccer America National Team of the Week and the Soccer Buzz National Elite Team of the Week. The previous MAC Player of the Week is fifth in the conference in points (18) and seventh in goals (7).
BGSU holds a 3-1-1 series advantage over Marshall, including a 3-0 win last year at Cochrane Field (Oct. 4, 2002).
Bowling Green can clinch a MAC tourney spot with two wins this weekend.
