Akron, Ohio - Kirk Harwat scored his fifth goal of the year for the #21 Akron Zips to beat Marshall, 1-0 in MAC men's soccer action on Friday night.
Akron (7-2-1, 3-0-0) won their third straight MAC contest and held their position atop the conference. Kirk Harwat scored the only goal of the game in the 53rd minute and was assisted by Ross McKenzie. Justin Christafaris earned the shutout for the Zips.
Marshall (1-8-0, 0-3-0) played one man down from the 39th minute on after Firas Al-Samarraie (Malmoe, Sweden) got a red card for unsportsmanlike behavior. From that point on, the defense stepped up their play and allowed one goal on 19 shots, four of which were on goal.
Marshall goalie Chris McKinney (Princeton, WV) played a strong game, allowing only one goal against the #21 team in the country. The defense in front of him also played well.
Marshall Head Coach Bob Gray drew many positives from the game. "We played well, the back four stepped up their game when we were a man down and kept us in the game. I think we made some great strides tonight and can use this experience as a positive."
Gray is also looking forward to their contest against Shepherd College on Sunday at Sam Hood Field. "I hope for a good result on Sunday," Gray said, "I hope we can continue playing the way we did tonight."
Akron outshot Marshall, 19-11. Kirk Gibson (Allen, TX) had three shots to lead the Herd. Akron had three players with three shots each.
Marshall will continue play on Sunday at Sam Hood Field when they host the Shepherd College Rams. Gametime is 1:00 p.m. Admission is free.
