HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? Buffalo shocked the Marshall volleyball team with a 3-0 (30-27, 35-33, 30-24) sweep at the Cam Henderson Center that put the Thundering Herd?s hopes of hosting a first round match in next week?s Mid-American Conference Tournament in jeopardy.
The Bulls (11-18, 5-10 MAC) dominated play at the net, out-blocking Marshall 13-4, forcing the Herd (17-15, 7-8 MAC) into only a .045 hitting percentage on the night. By contrast, UB hit at a .237 clip.
Senior Lindsay Matikosh pounded 13 kills to go along with 13 digs for UB, one of three Bull double-doubles. Setter Amy Brown recorded 40 assists with 10 digs while Molly Schrantz tallied 11 kills and 10 digs. Katie Weekley, the MAC blocks leader, posted six blocks versus the Herd.
The Bulls fell to Marshall 0-3 on Oct. 24 at Alumni Arena, but returned the favor to the homestanding Herd on Saturday.
Marshall could not get on track all match long, hitting 36 errors to the Bulls? 20. Amber Sims (Ney, Ohio) killed 10 balls, followed by Jen Harper (Columbus, Ohio) and Isabell Anderer (Sinsheim, Germany) with six kills each.
MU?s Tracey King (Miami, Fla.) tied for the match lead at 14 digs with UB?s Nikki Morzenti.
Pending Friday?s results from around the league, the Herd is forced to pick up a victory in Saturday?s match versus East Division rival Kent State in order to give themselves a shot at a first round home match in the postseason tournament.
?The coaching staff and the players are already preparing for Kent State,? Marshall head coach Mitch Jacobs said. ?This match is behind us, we?ve got to get on the right track and play with positive energy tomorrow night.?
Saturday?s 7 p.m. match versus the Golden Flashes at the Henderson Center is Senior/Fan Appreciation Night. Marshall will honor its senior class while giving away Herd coolers to the first 150 fans in attendance.
