HUNTINGTON, W.Va.?Marshall University Director of Golf Joe Feaganes announced four signees to compete for the Thundering Herd beginning in the fall of 2004-05. Chris Tipper of Parkersburg, W.Va., Jonathan Pepe of McKeesport, Pa., Matt Scytkowski of South Hadley, Mass., and Trent Schambach of Glen Dale, W.Va. all signed National Letters of Intent this week for Marshall.
?I am very pleased with this year?s recruiting class,? said Feaganes. ?Each player has a number of impressive golf accomplishments and they are all fine young men. I expect all of them to have an immediate impact on our golf team next year.?
Tipper comes to Huntington from Parkersburg High School. In 2003, he had a 72.5 high school stroke average and was the runner-up in the Mountain State Athletic Conference Tournament, as well as being an All-MSAC selection. He was a medalist in five high school tournaments, was the co-medalist at the West Virginia Open Qualifier at The Pines Country Club, and named to the Plantation Junior Tour All-American Team. In 2002, he was the runner-up at the WVGA Junior Match Play Tournament and was a member of the West Virginia Junior Cup Team when they took on Virginia. Also in 2002, he placed third at the West Virginia High School Championship and was a regional medalist, while being a co-medalist at the U.S. Junior Qualifier. Top Flite also named him the Junior Tour Player of the Year in ?02.
Pepe, a native of McKeesport, Pa., and currently a student at Serra Catholic High School, qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur and was a medalist in the Pennsylvannia sectional qualifier for the U.S. Junior Amateur. He placed 13th at the North-South Junior Tournament at Pinehurst, and was 14th at the AJGA Lessings Junior Tournament. A two-time qualifier for the Pennsylvannia High School Championship, he currently has a 36.6 nine-hole high school scoring average.
Scytkowski comes to Huntington from South Hadley High School where he has won two Western Massachusetts Division I State Championships. On the junior circuit, he was a runner-up at the AJGA Bluegrass Junior Tournament in Ashland, Ky., tied for fifth at the AJGA New Seabury/Isney Junior, and tied for 15th at the AJGA Greater Hartford Junior Tournament, while also finishing runner-up at the Massachusetts Junior Qualifier. In 2002, he was the Western Massachusetts Divison I Player of the Year.
The Herd?s final signee is also a West Virginia resident, Trent Schambach. Schambach currently attends John Marshall High School, where he claimed the West Virginia AAA State Championship in 2003. He was named the Ohio Valley Golf Association Junior Player of the Year, and has won two Top Flite Junior Tour Events. Like the Herd?s other West Virginia signee, Chris Tipper, he also participated on the West Virginia Junior Cup Team vs. Virginia (scored the most points for the West Virginia team). He finished 15th at the West Virginia Open, where he was the fourth lowest amateur and the low junior scorer. He qualified for the West Virginia Amateur, and placed fourth at the West Virginia Junior Amateur. An AAA regional medalist (Wheeling Country Club), he has a nine-hole scoring average of 36.3, and an 18-hole average of 73.0.
