Women's Tennis falls To No. 71 Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, MN?The Marshall women?s tennis team fell Saturday to the No. 71 ranked Gophers of the University of Minnesota. The match stretched nearly four and a half hours, as Jessica Johnson picked up Marshall?s only point of the day.

Minnesota began the match by claiming the doubles point. Jeannette Cluskey and Valerie Vladea were leading Lille Nzudie and Joelle Good, 7-2, at No. 2 doubles before the Marshall duo defaulted due to injury. Amy Thomas and Nischela Reddy clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 victory at No. 3 doubles.

In singles, Minnesota cruised to a pair of victories and then had to sweat out four singles matches that went to three sets. Vladea defeated Nzudie, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 3 singles and Cluskey defeated Joelle Good, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 4 singles. Junior Angela Buergis clinched the match with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 win over Alice Sukner at No. 2 singles. In addition, Amy Thomas and Reddy also earned three-set wins for the Golden Gophers.

Marshall will meet No. 15 the University of Washington Sunday, after the Huskies were upset earlier by Harvard.
