LAS CRUCES, NM- Marshall University?s Softball Team was defeated 8-0 by the Spartans of San Jose State in game four of the New Mexico State Softball Tournament. The Herd evened its record at 2-2 with the loss.
San Jose State (4-4) started off the game scoring a single run in the bottom of the first with a lead off double and a pair of infield hits. The Spartans added another run in the third with a bloop double and a Marshall error.
San Jose State?s Veronica Ramos broke the game wide open when she blasted a grand slam to put the Spartans up 6-0 in the fourth inning. Carol Forbes smashed a solo home run for SJSU in the fifth and the Spartans pushed across another run to make the score 8-0.
Marshall wasn?t able to answer and the game ended after the fifth inning due to the mercy rule. The sister duo of Amanda and Jessica Williams (Acworth, GA) had the Herd?s two lone hits of the contest. Sarah Chamberlain (Moses Lake, WA) received her first loss of the season on the mound.
Marshall will play its final game of the New Mexico State Tournament against Eastern Illinois University at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday.
