Marshall Softball Blasts Wagner, 12-4
2/23/2003
- MU vs. WC
ATLANTA, Ga.- Picking up where they left off Saturday night before a rain suspension, the Marshall University Softball Team defeated Wagner College 12-4 in five innings on Sunday at Georgia State?s Bob Heck Field.
?I was ready,? freshman catcher Jennifer Susman said of a clutch hit in the top of the fifth inning. ?I knew I was going to jump on the first pitch and was on cloud nine when I came through for my team.?
The Herd (5-2) started off with a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Wagner was able to come back with a home run in the first and a pair of hits in the second to tie the game 3-3.
Marshall answered quickly, scoring four runs in the top of the third inning. De?Shaun Drake (Spring Valley, Ca.) started things off with a double to deep center field and moved to third on the throw. Allison Webb (Wayne, WV) then walked and Sara Spenia (Las Vegas, NV) perfectly placed a suicide squeeze for a base hit which scored Drake and moved Webb to second. Leigh Wintter (Acworth, Ga.) laid down another well placed bunt, which the Seahawks errored, allowing Noelle Adams, (Wheeling, WV) who came in to run for Webb, to score and moving Spenia to third. Wintter moved to second on a fielder?s choice before Courtney Kacenga (Sierra Vista, AZ) lined a single to left field to score Spenia. Kacenga promptly stole second before Wagner errored a Sierra Davenport (Tucson, AZ) hit, advancing Kacenga to third and scoring Wintter. Davenport swiped second on a delayed steal, allowing Kacenga to score from third for the fifth and final run of the inning.
The Seahawks countered with one run in the bottom of the fourth, but that wouldn?t be nearly enough with the Herd swinging the hot bats. Kacenga doubled to get things going in the fifth. Jessica Willams (Powder Springs, Ga.) walked and Jennifer Suman (Lewisburg, WV) blasted a single to left field to load the bases. Amanda Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) blasted a bases loaded triple that scored all three runners. Missy Workman (Huntington, WV) forced A. Williams home with an RBI ground out to make the score 12-4. Wagner tried to come back in the bottom half of the inning, but left fielder Sarah Wilson (Parkersburg, WV) cut down the Seahawk runner at the plate for the final out of the contest. The game ended after the fifth inning due to the mercy rule.
The Herd came up with 12 hits in the contest, scoring 12 runs. Drake went 2-for-3, A. Williams was 2-for-4 and Spenia went 2-for-2 to lead Marshall at the plate. Davenport got the win on the mound, giving up six hits in five innings and improving her record to 1-0 on the season.
Marshall will play again at approximately 2:00 p.m. against the host Georgia State University.
