Women's Tennis Sweeps Conference Opener, Defeats Miami 7-0
2/28/2003
Huntington, W.Va.-After a three week hiatus, the Marshall University women?s tennis team showed no sign of rustiness as they cruised to a 7-0 victory over Miami (Ohio) to open conference play. With the victory, the Thundering Herd improved to 4-5 on the year, 1-0 in the Mid-American Conference.
?I think after a three week break, the team was anxious to get back on the court,? head coach John Mercer said. ?I think the layoff had us focused on this match and made us extremely tough to beat. Overall, I was pleased in the way our entire squad opened the conference season.?
Marshall opened the match by easily capturing the doubles point, surrendering only three games in the three doubles matches. The 13th ranked tandem of Jessica Johnson and Alice Sukner coasted to victory in the number one doubles slot, defeating Megan Zimpfer and Ilze Meyer 8-1. The number two doubles team of Ashley Kroh and Lille Nzudie blanked Miami?s Nancy Wiegand and Remy Swain 8-0 while MU?s number three squad of Danielle Hock and Joelle Good defeated Grace Cascarilla and Maura Trauernicht 8-2 to claim the doubles point.
After securing the doubles point, the Thundering Herd needed to claim only half the singles matches to defeat the Redhawks; however, MU managed victory in all six matches, losing only one set along the way. Sukner, Nzudie, Hock, Good and Meghan Skalsky all claimed straight set victories over their opponents. Johnson, in the only match that went three sets, defeated Zimpfer in the number one singles position 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
With her individual victory, Skalsky is undefeated on the year in singles, pushing her mark to 2-0 on the year. Meanwhile, the tandem of Sukner and Johnson continued their impressive play by pushing their mark to 6-2 on the year.
Marshall will continue their non-conference slate when they host the University of Cincinnati at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 8. The match is scheduled to be played outdoors at the Henderson Center Tennis Courts.
